Google's free one-year AI student plan: eligibility and the renewal catch

Google opened a new student promotion on August 19, 2026: eligible higher-education students can receive a paid Google AI plan for 12 months at no charge from the day they redeem it. The offer must be claimed by December 31, 2026. Google does not publish a cutoff timezone, so do not leave verification until the final day.

This is not the normal Gemini free tier. The plan depends on where your eligible institution is located:

• United States: Google AI Pro, advertised by Google at a normal value of $19.99 per month, with four-times-higher Gemini usage limits and 5 TB of storage during this offer.
• Eligible markets outside the United States: Google AI Plus, with two-times-higher Gemini usage limits and 400 GB of storage.

The plan names, storage, and feature allowances differ by country. The Google One student storefront is the final source for the exact plan offered to your account.

The offer terms exclude institutions in Albania, Bolivia, Canada, Hong Kong, Macau, and Tunisia. Elsewhere, the relevant Google AI plan must be supported in the institution’s country or region. A country appearing in Google’s general product availability list does not override the student-offer exclusions.

Who can and cannot claim it

You need all of the following:

1. Be at least 18 years old.
2. Be enrolled at an eligible higher-education institution in a supported country or region.
3. Pass SheerID student verification. Google’s help page says to use a valid school email address.
4. Use a personal Google Account and a Google Payments account.
5. Add a qualifying payment method during sign-up.

Google also lists several disqualifiers. You cannot claim this offer with a supervised account, as part of a Google family group, as an enterprise purchaser, with a discounted Pixel bundle, or while your Google One subscription is billed through a third party or affiliate such as Google Fi. Family members must leave the shared plan before claiming; that can change storage sharing and other household benefits, so review the consequences first.

The offer is not available on a school-issued Workspace for Education account. Use a personal account you control, but do not copy course materials into it unless you are allowed to place those materials in a consumer AI service.

How to claim it in about 10–20 minutes

1. Open Google’s official student storefront with your personal Google Account.
2. Check the plan name, storage allowance, and price shown for your region before continuing.
3. Choose the 12-month student trial and complete SheerID verification. Have your school email ready; SheerID may ask for supporting enrollment evidence if automatic verification fails.
4. Add a qualifying payment method in Google Payments and finish the subscription flow.
5. Save the redemption confirmation and the exact offer-end date shown in your account.
6. Create two calendar reminders: one 30 days before renewal and another seven days before renewal.

Verification can take longer than 20 minutes when SheerID needs manual evidence. The setup estimate describes the normal account flow, not a guaranteed approval time.

The catch: it is a renewing subscription

The payment method is not optional. On the day your 12-month offer period ends, Google says it will automatically charge the standard monthly price for the plan in your country until you cancel, except where applicable law requires new consent.

Google promises an advance notification, but your own calendar reminder is safer. Cancelling during the free period may leave the membership active until its scheduled end. Confirm the cancellation screen rather than assuming that removing a card or ignoring an email stops billing.

Storage is another exit cost. If you use more than your post-offer Google Account storage limit and then cancel, Google says you will not be able to store new data until you delete files or buy enough storage. Do not treat the larger promotional allowance as permanent capacity.

Plan and usage limitations

Google’s terms say promotional members may receive different usage limits from paid members, and those limits can change without notice because of capacity. “Four times” or “two times” higher refers to comparison with the normal free experience; it is not unlimited use.

The student help page also says recurring add-ons such as upgraded storage, Google Home Premium, and Google Health Premium cannot be added to a student offer. Switching from the trial to another paid membership ends the trial path, and you cannot downgrade back into the same 12-month offer.

Use the year to test one repeatable workflow

Do not claim a year of AI access and then measure success by how many prompts you send. Pick one study job with a visible outcome:

• turn your own lecture notes into a weekly revision checklist;
• compare a draft against a marking rubric without submitting private classmate work;
• build practice questions from material you are authorized to upload;
• create a research map, then verify every citation in the original source;
• use Gemini in Docs to revise a portfolio case study while keeping your own voice.

Record the time saved, factual corrections, and any limits you hit. Before renewal, compare that evidence with the standard price shown in your Google One account. The promotion is valuable if it helps you decide from a year of real use—not if it quietly turns into a subscription you forgot.

Verdict

For an eligible student, 12 months of Google AI Pro or AI Plus at no charge is a meaningful benefit. The restrictions are also material: supported higher education only, six excluded regions, age 18+, SheerID, a personal account, a payment method, changing usage limits, and automatic conversion to a paid monthly plan.

Claim it before December 31 if the plan fits a real study workflow. Then record the exact renewal date immediately and reassess before Google charges the standard local price.

Continue with the workload, cost, and control decision framework before deciding whether the plan still earns a place in your setup after the free year.
